Economic Uses of Salt-Tolerant Plants

چکیده

Climate change is likely to affect the ability of world agricultural systems provide food, fibre, and fuel for growing population, especially since area salinised land will increase. However, as few species plants (less than 1% all plant species) can tolerate saline soils, we believe it important evaluate their potential crops soils. We have analysed economic uses that are listed in database eHALOPH, including most tolerant species, halophytes. For nine main categories value, found a total 1365 amongst eHALOPH July 2022; this number reduced 918 did not find any obvious differences rankings between more halophytes whole group salt-tolerant plants, where order use was medical, followed by forage, traditional medicine, food drink, fuel, fuelwood, bioenergy. While many potentially crops, effects salt concentration on much less well documented. Increasing increase, decrease, or no effect antioxidants different but there little evidence salinity yield (the product biomass). The forage quality again varies with often being reduced, overall consequences livestock production rarely been evaluated. Salt-tolerant bioremediation degraded (including revegetation, phytoremediation, extraction NaCl) sources biofuels, although water sustainable irrigation must be viewed extreme caution.

Developing salt-tolerant crop plants: challenges and opportunities.

Soil salinity, one of the major abiotic stresses reducing agricultural productivity, affects large terrestrial areas of the world; the need to produce salt-tolerant crops is evident. Two main approaches are being used to improve salt tolerance: (i) the exploitation of natural genetic variations, either through direct selection in stressful environments or through mapping quantitative trait loci...

Incorporating thresholds into understanding salinity tolerance: A study using salt‐tolerant plants in salt marshes

Although salinity in many ecosystems such as salt marshes can be extremely high, an asymmetry in salinity range between experimental studies (relatively narrow) and field conditions (potentially broad) has strongly affected current understanding of plant salinity tolerance. To improve understanding, it is thus important to examine plant tolerances over a broad range of salinities and identify p...

Salt-related Genes Expression Pattern in Salt-Tolerant and Salt-Sensitive Cultivars of Cotton (Gossypium sp.) under NaCl Stress

Salinity is one of the most important limitation factors in development of agricultural products. Cotton has a relative tolerance to salinity; however, salinity reduces its growth during germination and seedling stages. In this research, split-factorial design of time based on randomized complete block design with 3 replications was used. The real-time PCR results for, root, stem, and leaves of...

Engineering salt-tolerant Brassica plants: characterization of yield and seed oil quality in transgenic plants with increased vacuolar sodium accumulation.

Transgenic Brassica napus plants overexpressing AtNHX1, a vacuolar Na(+)/H(+) antiport from Arabidopsis thaliana, were able to grow, flower, and produce seeds in the presence of 200 mM sodium chloride. Although the transgenic plants grown in high salinity accumulated sodium up to 6% of their dry weight, growth of the these plants was only marginally affected by the high salt concentration. More...

T H E Role of Chloride in 02 Evolution by Thylakoids from Salt-tolerant Higher Plants

(1) Thylakoids isolated from leaves of two salt-tolerant higher plant species were found to require high (greater than 250 mM) concentrations of C! for maximal rates of photosynthetic 02 evolution and maximum variable chlorophyll a fluorescence yield. These activities were also tolerant to extremely high (2-3 M) salt concentrations. Their pH dependence was markedly different in the absence and ...
